First edition of Balmont’s translation of Leaves of Grass. Balmont writes in the preface here that these translations, ‘with the exception of 20–30 pieces printed largely in the journals Vesy and Pereval, appear here for the first time. They are the result of many years reading Leaves of Grass and were done in the autumns of 1903 and 1905, in the magical hours of our belated northern mornings and evenings, on the coast of the Baltic Sea … and even in Moscow in the autumn of 1905 to the accompaniment of the incessant music of rifle shots …’ (p. 7, my translation), a reference to the 1905 Revolution.
