First edition in Russian of three plays by the great Spanish dramatist: La devoción de la cruz, Peor está que estaba, and El alcalde de Zalamea, published in the series Biblioteka evropeiskikh pisatelei i myslitelei (‘Library of European Writers and Thinkers’), edited by Vladimir Chuiko (1839–1899), a socialist revolutionary—he was imprisoned in 1866 for links with Karakozov, after the latter’s attempt on the Tsar’s life—who was also well known as a critic and translator (Heine, Balzac, Stendhal, etc.). His Shekspir, ego zhizn’ i proizvedeniia (‘Shakespeare, his life and work’, 1889) is one of the most extensive works on Shakespeare to be written in Russian.
